THE COMPANY
By 1891, the trolley had replaced all of the horsecars in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. In that same year, the separate Minneapolis and St. Paul systems merged, creating the Twin City Rapid Transit Company. From then until 1970, if you rode a streetcar or later, a bus, anywhere in Minneapolis or St. Paul, you probably did so as a passenger of TCRT. At its peak in the 1920's, the company operated more than 900 streetcars, owned 523 miles of track carried an excess of 200 million passengers each year. Its assets over the years included a grand hotel and 2 amusement parks, one at White Bear Lake (with a fleet of boats) and another at Lake Minnetonka.
THE CARS - WORK EQUIPMENT
As of January 1944, TCRT rostered 78 work cars, all built at the 31st & Snelling shops specifically for the company's needs. Multiple cars of the same type, such as snow plows, work flats and wire cars were assigned to carhouses around the system. Still others were unique and assigned to specific departments for specific jobs. The latter were stored at the Snelling or Nicollet stations when they were not needed. Work cars and equipment assigned to the track department included: a.) trolley work flats for transporting rail, ties and ballast b). crane cars for lifting rail and special work (switches and crossovers) into place and c). a sprinkler car for watering down unpaved streets.
